My buddy and I will be overnighting in Nassau a week from this friday and I was wondering if somebody could suggest a decent place to grab an evening meal (a good burger or steak would do) without having to head into the heart of town. We're staying at the Orange Hill Inn.
Don't know where you are staying, but I just had a great steak at the Outback Steakhouse, which is right near the Paradise Island bridge. Price was $ 18.95, which is cheap for down there.
Nassau is noted for horrendously overpriced food, so we went with a safe choice.
Although I haven't been to Nassau (yet) the Brazilian beef I enjoyed in Aruba and St.Marten was excellent and the seafood was even better if you went to a reputable place as Jay mentioned. Split broiled lobster tail fresh from the reef did it for me! Maybe the m/d at the hotel could direct you to a good meal.
Juro..the only thing about the lobster down there( and I am speaking of the Bahamas not Aruba so there maybe a difference between those two) is that is was a far cry from our own "Maine" lobsters from here... the taste was not the same..in fact I thought it was very bland as a comparison...but the grouper was great!
On East Bay street, just east of the Paradise island bridge (Mackey st) there is an exquisite Bahamian restaurant. It's an old pastel-colored colonial house with manicured grounds and a beautiful porch . I had probably the best grilled conch I've ever had there. Expensive, but not unreasonable. If you want to try the best in Bahamian and carribiean cuisine, give it a shot.
To the west, within easy walking distance of the wharf, (I think on Marlborough street) is a good cheap place to get fried conch, fritters and Bahamian food samplers. I forget the name of the place, but it's easy to find. You really can't miss it if you walk west from the wharf.
Right under the Paradise island bridge (Mackey street) is a food market where you can get the most wonderful fresh conch salad and seviche right from the stalls. Not really dinner but a great place to stop by if you're wondering around. The conch is still alive when they cut it up for you.
If you have a car, on West street (straight up from Junkanoo beach) there is a 'local fare' restaurant that serves up great and inexpensive Bahamian food. This is the place to try souse, pig feet, skillygalee, duffs and the like. If you want to experience what the locals eat, this is it. Flavored duffs are a must here. Any hotel concierge can direct you, or just drive up west street and look to your left.
You've hit my soft spot when you mentioned (c)seviche. Nothing I find more refreshing and/or satisfying than a great raw seafood salad loaded with onions and peppers while swimming in lime juice. Do they by chance include squid and/or octopus in it? I don't expect it'd be "Atkins" friendly...but what the heck...I'm on vacation.
Now I just have to convince my buddy it'll be worth stopping off and sampling some en route to the nearest hamburger joint...DOH!@#
