Preparing the house for the move to RI and want to keep a little tying station together so I can tie flies to be ready for some fishing when I get into town. Was thinking about buying flies but cannot justify the prices.
I got enough deep eels to last a lifetime but nothing else. The Skok Mushmouth looks simple and sounds like it is effective on multiple species I may encounter in September. Any colors in particular?
What else are must haves in your box? Will not have a lot of time to tie but want to be as prepared as possible.
Mushmouths are good. You might want to have some sort of surf candy epoxy flies, as well as some standard deceiver type patterns. I'm sure that others will have more suggestions for you.
Don't forget black flies if you'll be fishing at night.
For Narragansett bay in the fall the top bait will be peanut bunker. They will be everywhere in large schools. Skok's musmouth can be tied to imitate them as well as many other patterns from basic deceivers to Puglisi style patterns etc...When the blues are on you can throw just about anything at them and they will destroy flies so use your judgement there. Next on the list would be silverside patterns if you intend to go for False Albacore and I have had the most luck with epoxy surf candie style flies with craft fur or the new DNA stuff looks killer. These are very finicky fish in my experience and if you ask nicely I bet you could get a few guys from this board to hand over a few that will work. Slinger probably has enough tied for all of Rhode Island. From there you get into Mullet Patterns, larger herring patterns etc...The deep eels probably won't get much play in my opinion as the sand eel is not as prominant a bait in the fall. Keep in touch as your move date gets closer.
Dark back (blue, olive, brown) over a light pretty flashy belly. Mix in some pinks and yellows if you want to get fancy. These baits are shaped like a football and anywhere between say 1" to 6" in length should get the job done.
Glad to hear you'll be terrorizing the local finned gangstas of the shore soon.
I am big into big bangers on the 2hander. Also tie up some borski sliders in neutral colors, some calico crabs for summer flats and some epoxy silversides for the hardtails in late August - October.
Big squid have put some great fish on my line especially around the Nantucket / Vineyard Sound shoreline in mid-late May when the squid make their 5pm showing at the inlets from Woods hole to Chatham.
Most importantly phase the shades on the deep eels to match the time of year. Over the years this has bought me more hookups than changing flies for color.
On the north shore and in early season have a big mackeral fly on hand. I've hooked some of my biggest bass this way up north.
Late fall have your biggest adult bunker patterns ready to go. I almost got spooled with 250yds 30# backing once by a fish hooked on a huge bunker in October where the bait was bigger than the snapper blues cruising around and the avg fis being landed by the wood guys was pushing 30#. This was on a single handed 9wt.
Knowing you as well as I do I know you will do as I do - let the fish tell you what to tie once you get out there.
Don`t forget Crease flys! I don`t know why but they`re killer. Bob Pops surf candies in a silverside scheme and small, 2", bay anchovies. With limited time, tie what you`ll need first. At that time the fishing will be primarily blues right outside your doorstep and Albies on the south county shores, with the migration starting in late Oct.
Slinger
If you're looking to get some flies together relatively quickly, the Bonito Bunny can't be beat for albies and bonito. It takes about a minute to tie, and it's all I've ever needed for the tuniods in MA/RI.
Other than that, it sounds like you'll be pretty well covered, but if you end up with some spare time, you might want to tie up some big grocery deceivers(4/0 hook, 6-8+" long, bulky) for the big migrating cows.
