Upstate NY is a very broad term! To people in NYC, Putnam County is upstate NY! So can you be a little more specific? My dad lived in Westchester county (the county north of NYC and east of the Hudson) for 20 years, and my mom has lived an hour directly west of Albany (3.5 hours north of Westchester) for the last 25 years, so I have a lot of experience fishing in those areas of "upstate" NY.
I can attest to some excellent trout fishing in both places!

I found excellent fishing around Ithaca, lake run Atlantics, browns, and steelhead that responded well to swung dries and wets, nice small stream fishing for rainbows, browns, and brookies (sometimes of size, especially the browns), excellent panfish ponds, and superb smallmouth bass that both entered rivers and would cruise around wadable flats of Cayuga Lake in the summer. This all within 10-15 minutes of town.
Sorry for the confusion, I have not fished in New York at all, but have heard that there is some good fly fishing in the state. I am in R.I. and thought that a trip to NY would be doable..
Just asking for suggestions, upstae, midstate, etc. is does not matter. I would like to find a lodge , etc. that is close to some decent fishing.
There are many outstanding opportunities in the Adirondacks. Rivers that come to mind include The St. Regis, Saranac, Ausable, Chateaugay, Chazy, and the Salmon (near Malone, not Pulaski). Plus, there's the lesser known flows. Additionally, the lake and pond fishing is exceptional. If trout or landlocked salmon are not your thing, pike, both large and smallmouth bass, walleye, and various pan fish are here for the taking. Give me a Pm if I can help.
Happy New Year. I second FishHawk...try the West Branch of the Delaware up between Deposit and Hancock NY. The East Branch is good also..but never fished it. see attached

I think the Marlboro MA show has a presentation on the Delaware. It may be a good place to start your research.
