This crazy weather got me to thinking of a Yak Clave this Spring. Can't wait for 01 to end. With all that has happened. My daughter being in New York near ground zero and my neighbors son who was on the 81 floor and both survived.
Hope that we can use the causeway next year. Any word on that? Can't wait until we get in our yaks and chase those big stripers.

Cauzzzway Armada

It's nice to have something this bright at the end of the winter tunnel! The tying/casting/showgoing is all special but... I can just imagine the "cauzzzway armada" launching at first light and the anticipation rivals Christmas morning as a sprout.
This YakAttack Spring Clave idea will certainly float when the time is right!
Count me in!

Well its a bit early but I've been obsessed with thoughts of the bayside flats in June. And its time for a little payback.

Tentatively... because with graduations, weddings etc. June can be tough:

I'm thinking a Fathers day weekend wade and yak assault on the bayside. Spread out between Paines, Quivet, Chase Garden/Chapin and Barnstable Harbor. I could host a Saturday evening cookout and provide lodging for eight or so in Dennis. Maybe other lodging possiblities will open up.

Any interest or is it too early to think about this?

Count me in! I am OK for lodging but unfortunately can't put anyone else up that time of year. I'm lucky if I get the couch myself with all the relatives in the cottage at once. I'll make the cookout and of course, the flats action.

I'll also volunteer to escort any interested yakker's to the Paine's flats structures which I know pretty well. I used to know Quivett but it changes radically every year. I used to know Chase Garden too but the shoals off Bass Hole are even more unstable than Quivett. The best bet off Bass Hole is to ride the dropping tide out to the Sandy Neck channel and come back to Chase Garden on the flood. You just need to get east of the big tide push or you'll end up at Bone Hill.

Don't leave out the east end of Brewster Flats near Point of Rocks (well about a mile off shore).

Because of the big tides, this area is actually best fished from the boat than the shore. But if you have an escape pod to get away from danger, shore fishing can be great like the day Roop, Hawkeye and I hit Brewster. If they didn't come pick me up though I would have been a cooked goose.

I plan to fish on my feet, keeping moving from shoal to shoal as the tide comes in. That's going to be my M/O and I will need as much experience in timing the tides and high points on the flats as possible during my first year with the new "yak".

If the "First Annual Yak Attack Clave" is going to take place in June we should band together and flex our purchasing muscle at an event like this one hosted by North Cove Outfitters:

Paddlesports Rally Weekend 2002

"Try Before You Buy" is the theme for this two day event. In addition to being the largest demo days in New England, It is also an important fundraiser for Camp Hazen. We invite you to meet the major canoe and kayak vendors person-to-person. Ask questions. Try out canoes and kayaks in the water. Plus, you may purchase and take home any boat you see that day!

When - May 4th - 5th, 2002
Where - Camp Hazen YMCA - Chester, CT

Paddlers are asked to make a modest donation to the camp which is good for a whole weekend of paddling. This year's event broke previous attendance records and we also gave away several brand new kayaks!

So plan on coming out and "Try Before You Buy!"

Here are the yaks they carry:

Mad River Canoe
Necky
Dagger
Old Town Canoe
Impex
Perception
Eddyline
Heritage
Wilderness Systems
Bell Canoe Works
Ranger Canoe

We could also descend on the people at Charles River Canoe & Kayak for a private demo day. I'm sure they would do it if we could get enough potential buyers in one place at the same time.

How many other forum members are looking to buy a yak?

Senior Roopmeister...
If you're talkin' the "big salt" and need a wingman, gimme' a heads up when next you plan an attack!
Misery loves company! (better bring a sweater...)

The doc said "no heavy lifting for 6-8 weeks..." What do ya suppose he means by heavy?
Yaks aren't heavy unless they are full of wet stuff and ocean!?

Speaking of accessories...
Keep your eyes open for "extreme leading edge (paddles/bow) titanium ice-breaker inserts"... Despite their light weight, they help you get through that pesky thin layer of ice that would other wise rain on your parade!
