For small streams I prefer to keep the leader short. My reason is that in the small streams I fish a 25' cast is a real long cast. So not much of the line is out to load the rod, and a shorter leader keeps more line out of the tip top.
So having said all that, I typically use about a 6 1/2 - 8 ' leader with the tippet being 20 - 30" of that length.
