I sorta have three - one broken in the truck by my darling wife who took it along to the beach for the kids one day, another that is a fiberglas/graphite composite daiwa, and one graphite IM6 7wt that is really, the only functional option of the bunch.
So I don't want to see my only 'real' 7wt but you can have the daiwa. Actually, it casts sweet and makes a great training rod for anyone you would like to teach to cast.
I think one of their IM6 blanks like Jim is using would be great (for my tastes) and they are very cost effective. I believe you also get an additional discount for ordering on-line.
Personally I'm looking for a new reel for my 6 weight. My old SA series one is kind of LOUD. I need something more tranquil....
Lefty/Roop: checkout www.redington.com For $195 you can get an excellent 5-piece rod in a 7wt with a lifetime guarantee. This is what I would consider a fast action. Everything about it is upscale for that price. They have new lines of reels that are awesome for the price. A click/pawl reel that is machined for $79 in the 2/3wt. They also have a line of offset drag reels that are machines for $109.
As Roop knows they have outstanding customer service and it is one flyfishing company that is on the move to displace some of the traditional high-end manufactuers.
Terry, Hoook & Hackle is selling Redington's Red Fly for $95. I think that's what everyone else is selling it for as well. You might get a break with them though.
Guys thanks. Sounds interesting, and Redington is a company that really atracts me for this 7 wt. I'm always a little leary of a companies lowest product. So I would rather spend a few extra bucks and get the next model up. Since the show is so close, I'm going to look around see if I can get a bargain there too. I want a med fast to fast action. I know....kaching...kaching.
Cabelas has the full Redington line. They got the $95 Red-Fly rod, $160-ish Red Start, and new 4 piece travel rod in a "7-8" wt. for $145 (I believe these are also "Red. Fly". That sounds like the rod to try. IM6 too.
I have the 7wt 9'6" silver label and it is now my primary rod for ocean salmon fishing. A very nice casting rod and is actually the same blank that is on a trident without the fancy components. The above lists the 10 foot 3 piece but the extra length is handy for float tubing. A good deal at $217.
These rods are much better in my opinion than the redington red starts or red flys.
When I bought what I refer to as my first REAL saltwater fly rod (after 6 years of messing around with a #11 LL Bean Guide noodle) my final decision was between the SL and the St. Croix LU.
Only went with the St. Croix because of a personality clash with the local Orvis guy.
Anyway - great deal, I love the 10' 7 weight, schoolie rod, great pond rod. Just say no, just say no, just say no.... :eyecrazy:
FYI - Smitty now carries Orvis as well, that guy has just about anything you could need for any budget. :smokin:
Wow just looked at the Cabelas site. They only seem to have the Redington "Wayfarer" and "Nano Titanium". I'm going to get a decent rod either way.
