That's a good question..I have always wondered why material like angel hair or other saltwater material would not work in the freshwater... Except for insects.. bait fish could be tyed with some of the flash of angel hair... The standard Freshwater streamer for example does not always have to be like the Grey Ghost I would think... It seems to me that the Steelehead and trout flys have lots of room for inovation... Puglisi does a nice Perch fly... looks like a little perch.
John, The one word answer why streamer design varies less in trout fishing (I can't speak for steelhead or salmon) is "Tradition".
