This is a present for all seasons: three major dams on the Penobscot River in Maine have been purchased for $24M in order to decommission them. This major milestone taking place today follows more than a decade of the Atlantic Salmon Federation and many other organizations working together.

There has been no project like this elsewhere in the world. For a backgrounder on the Penobscot Project, the best chance to restore wild Atlantic salmon runs in the U.S., visit the resources page:

This is great news indeed don`t get me wrong with all the dam removals happening in eatern Canada and Us with river great river enhancement programs like the Petitcodiac River NB, dam removal on the Ell river NB and the same projected for 2011 on the Escoumins River Qc just to name a few.

Its a funny world for the salmon while Maine dismantle their dams us Québecois are destroying salmonrivers by building hydro electric dams on many salmon rivers to create electricity to sell to eastern US market. I guess what the US calls green renewable energy comming from Québec is not as green when it commes from US rivers :Eyecrazy:

The Rogue River has just had all its (save for one) pulled out.

Well, rephrase that, pulled out completely (Savage Rapids and Gold Ray) or enough removed/breached (Gold Hill and Trail Creek) there is no longer any obstruction(s) in the river until you get to the Wm Jess Dam at river mile 157. This is also the location of the fish hatchery.
