I have been messing around with my digital. Tried to take photos of flies in vise. They just don't come out very good. Blurry. Kind of lost. Any advice out there...?
Capt Gordon, thats a nice looking fly.
Do you find that the weed guard causes missed hook sets? The reason I ask is that I tied up a number of flies for freshwater that had double loops of 20# maxima and found that when they were fished in waters where I could see what was going on I missed a lot of fish. They did work well at keeping weeds off the flies though.
Since I am using that fly for redfish in unbelievably weed filled water. ther eis no alternative. The only strikes I have seen missed was when the person set with the rod and pulled the fly out of the fish's mouth. usually the red sucks it in so far that he is hooked way back in his crushers. Check out this photo and you will see what I mean:
I understand the no alternative part of the equation all to well. Just trying to figure out ways to improve my hook setting % with some fish that are less aggressive in their biting habits.
I've tinkered with weed guards and gone with 12# to 15# mono for smaller SW flys.
Just heavy enough to deflect the weeds but not enough to hinder a sticky sharp hook from finding its' mark.
