I'm intrigued by that Czech nymph on a circle hook on Mustad's site and am wondering if folks had success fishing circle hooks for trout. Somehow it seems their take is too tentative to be conducive to reliable circle hook hookups.
I think that the answer will depend upon how the Czech nymphs tied on circle hooks are used. If they are used heavily weighted in fast water with a high stick approach, which is what I believe the Czech nymphs were developed for, you should be able to get a hookset with the circle hooks. My experience with that method and J hooks is that you typically get aggressive hits and an easy hook set
My guess is that if use the circle hooks dead drifting the flys you won't catch much.
Since I've got some of the hooks that were mentioned for bait fishing with the kids, maybe I should give it a try?
Interesting topic. I don't think it would work on a dead drift either but for Czech nymphs, maybe.
If you use Czech nymphs for "polish nymphing" techniques, they might work. From what I have read polish nymphing is when you actually drag the nymphs slightly faster than the current to feel the strike....so there would a gradual increase in tension on the hook.
If you think about how small our local caddis larvae are and how small the gap would be, I think you'd be better off with a scud hook. I don't have any problems with gut/deeply hooked trout so I never really thought about it.
