Bob was good enough to bring the swap flies to the show, so I got more than my bag of show goodies today - I also ended up heading home with an excellent assortment of SWFF flies that I can't wait to fish this season! In fact the season can't start fast enough. Let's all extend a big thank you to Bob Pink for arranging the swap! He will be offered a guided trip from one of our sponsors for the contribution of time, effort and great photographs!
listed in the order they come out of the box...
GregO - chartreuse and angel hair gurgler... yooheah, topwater time! WHat could be better than a chug-chug>BLAM< right about now?
Bob Pink - 2-3 Feather Flatwing... tied like the classics, nice touch with the golden pheasant. A reminder to me that there is life beyond synthetics [TIC].
John Desjardins - Fishskin Bug variant... not only does the skin look great, it prevents fouling too. The complex layering of materials adds a lot of realism. Very innovative pattern!
Pete Lavoilette - Split tail squid... wow! this veteran of the rip trip shows us what he learned in the Monomoy Point Rip brine and brings it home all the way from Calgary!
Ron Lomas - Flatwing Bunker/herring... Looked great in the picture, looks even better in person. This will be a goto fly for twilight fishing for sure.
Jeff G - Pollock Fly... Cow-chow! Tied to appeal to the meat-eaters of the roccus clan. Don't fish this one without a good drag!
And a special fly from our awesome sponsor Rich Soriano - Grass shrimp... Rich I wish I had this one night a couple of seasons ago when some large fish were sipping shrimp on a moonlit night in a river mouth cove on Nantucket Sound. I tried everything in the book but couldn't buy a hit. Finally, I got the black max flashlight out of the truck and watched for ripples and hit the switch... squeteague! And some respectably sized grass shrimp darting around as well. Since that night I always put a couple shrimp flies in the box. Thanks to you, so will everyone in the swap!
BTW - don't throw Rich's business card away!
That's what I get for not putting my last name on the tying instructions I guess. Looking forward to getting my mail tonight. The pictures I have seen thus far look great.
The Wollaston post office has been pretty efficient so far but I'd begin looking for them to arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday...(can't beat a hand delivery). Hope everyone has fun with them. I probably should have photgraphed what my dining room looked like with 21 boxes arranged so I could distribute goodies evenly
I got the rest of the film back today, will try to process the digital images into reasonable file sizes and forward to Juro within the next few days...
BOB, Im puting a FLY in the mail for you! an you will have to tell me what it is???????????? you can put it up on the site if you wish,YES! it does work GREAT!
"GOOD LUCK GOOD TYIN"
I gotta comment on the photography once again... it's incredible! I find myself going to the archives just to admire the great flies people have put forth, and the photowork makes this possible.
After a very bad work day, I came home to my box o' flies. Even the Mrs. to be admitted she was jealous of a "hobbey" where people made and sent me free "presents."
Amongst the mix were Roop's squid pattern, which will be destined for the rips off the Vineyard in early June;
Hawkeye's great looking crab pattern--hmmm...Monomoy, or maybe the impending Keys trip?;
a nice deep sandeel with no name attached(?);
a nice olive and white yak hair 1/2 n 1/2 (was that Pete? now I am getting confused since they aren't infront of me)--pretty much a goto fly for every Beantown Harbor guide;
John's bugskin varient--very cool looking and a novel design;
Rich's grass shrimp--think a searun brown would eat that???
Today was my lucky day for flies in the mail. What a great collection and some awsome work that makes me feel guilty about the artistry of my products.
I recieved:
Tom D's Ray's fly - an all around classic fish getter
Roop's lucky squid - I'm thinkin poppy in the spring and then the RIP
GregO's silver popper - it's just screaming for me to take it to the North river spit
Marvin's killer looking marabou pattern - I can't wait to see it's action and I know some fish out there are going to wish they never had
and finally two clouser patterns with no names that will see some great action at the spring clave on the Bass river. One of them used white and olive super hair and the other was chartreuse with a cactus chenile body (an interesting inovation that I will be trying)
Thanks to you all and I know you have added to my season's success!
I was like a little kid on Christmas morning!!!
I also had an awful day at work and coming home to see the great job that everyone did, brightened the evening. Can't wait to test them out.
Thanx to everyone, especially you Bob!!!
See you at the Casting clave.
Brian
BOBP. it's NOT on the wall it's kept in my stash of special place flies.to this day only SEEN buy VERY chosen few, NO one knows HOW! an WHERE, to use them but us!"GOOD LUCK,GOOD TYIN"
Bob, outstanding job on the swap all around. From the collection and distribution to the photos. I opened up a box full of flies all in their own packaging and most with tying directions. Very impressive.
1.) Deep sandeel - Juro?
2.) Ray's fly - ???
3.) Yak Hair Half & Half - Dave Williams
4.) Shrimp pattern - Fly Rod & Reel Outfitters Salty Dog?
5.) Maribou Olive & White baitfish - Marvin
6.) Cockroach Deciever - ???
7.) 2-3 Feather Flatwing - Bob Pink
I got mine today too. The only word to describe them properly is WOW!
Thanks every one.
I should have added the following last night but was brain dead after a couple of nights of disrupted sleep (3 month old with an ear infection). The flies I received were:
Ron Lomas Flatwing looks real nice, I can't wait to try it.
Bigcat's Small white fly, Looks great, I immeadiatly thought of tying one ~ 1/3 of the size for trout.
Pete L's squid this one is worthy of a double wow.
Marvins Maribou creation, one of those flies that you look at and instantly say "this will catch fish".
Shadfreak's cockroach deceiver, I love using grizzly hackle in deceivers & can't wait to try this one.
An Olive & White Clouser, always a great combination this one makes the ones I tie look shabby by comparison.
The Shrimp pattern another one of those flies that you look at and instantly say "this will catch fish".
It was getting a little out of hand what with bagging all the flies individually. (When I saw what a nice job everyone did I didn't think it fair to have them bounced around in shipping) So, if someone sent the 'recipie' with thier flies, I was able to attach it to the bag. There were a few that didn't send directions ( AHEM, like Juro but he posted his on the BB long ago...! )
Again it was a lot of fun.
PS: Tod, for some unknown reason your box got left behind the back seat of my Tahoe. I dropped it off at the PO today, never fear they are on the way!

Hmmmmm, now you've got me going! Some of your specials are best utilized at lattitudes that fall between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn! I hope it comes with a plane ticket!
What a great surprise to come home to after correcting papers for about three hours after school. A box full of new flies to fish with and try to tie myself. The more that I look at these flies the more I realize that I have a long way to go as a tier. These are beautiful. A special thanks goes out to Bob P for all of his time and Juro for making it so easy for me to upload the image of my fly.
The flies I received
1. Fish Skin Bug Variant - John Desjardins
2. Rays Fly - ????
3. Dark shrimp - Fly Rod & Reel Outfitters
4. Small White Fly - Bigcat
5. Grego's Angel Hair Deep Sand Eel
6. Lucky Squid - Roop I have never fished a squid pattern before. I can't wait!
7. White super hair Clouser - ????
I got mine. Bob, thanks for a great job.. I can see you now at your dinning room table... " let see... this one goes here...no... over here... but no.... I already want to put that over there... what to do... what to do... when will this ever end".. I will not fish these but fish copies I will tye. The originals will go in another display case on my wall at the Chatham Anglers Club. here is my selection.
1) Dave Williams Bait fish
2) No Name white and olive clouser suspiciously looking like a Juro deep sand eel.. short version.. all buck tail.
3)No name White and chartreuse Clouser with Chopped super hair throat.
4) no name Flat wing.. buck tail.. white ,yellow (chartruese) and olive topped with peacock Hurls.
5) Tan and brown shrimp from Fly rod and reel outfitters.. Which person?
6)Gregg's flates sand eel.. "less is more"
7)Jeff Roops Pollack fly which I will use for stripers.
Let me know who has gotten mine .I submitted 6 different flies and I can not tell from the previous threads who got them... I would like to submit tying directions since I did not include them . Also.. Bob , I will have, in my opinion a perfect Poplovic Shrimp that I will give you at the casting clave.
Soon you'll be able to look in the archives and see who tied what as well as the recipes. The rest of the images will be up very soon, just working out the details.
Anyone who isn't in these swaps is missing out big time. Here's my report on Christmas in March:
Gregg Estey's flats sand eel is an absolute paradigmatic example of the beauty and functionality of sparse tying. A template; I'll fish my copies and keep Gregg's on the bench.
An anonymous Ray's Fly, also sparse and meticulous to the recipe, down to the Eagle Claw hook. My first choice searching fly, and tied far more neatly than mine. Another template.
A flashy chartreuse clouser with an Estaz/flash chenille-wrapped body. Neat innovation; will be copied shamelessly.
Marvin's glitter-head marabou sand eel. Great colors and great action, I'll bet. Easy to tie, too. Can't wait to try this one.
GregO's holographic Juvie-Pogie. Robo-fly with a big metallic hood of flash tape and plenty of red. Nantucket rips with this one.
Rich Soriano's (Fly Rod & Reel Outfitters) shrimp. Love shrimp. Can't palmer worth a damn; will have to practice to come close to this fantastic copy of the natural.
And finally, the swapmeister's bonus, Bob Pink's flatwing eel in the Abrames style. Copper and olive hackle and 3-4 colors of bucktail. Should be in a frame; another template.
Thanks to Juro and the board, thanks to the tyers, and special thanks to Bob for putting it all together.
I received my flies in the mail yesterday and they are great! Thanks, Bob for all of your work! And thanks to all the swappers. You've given me some wonderful flies to fish and a wealth of fly tying ideas! That's what this board is all about!
Dave Williams
Thanks for the assortment, Mr. Pink! ( I owe you a fly, Bob.)
And the tyers!!
Received an anonymous superhair sandeel topped with rainbow angel hair ( I think ); one of Roop's squid...why the offer of a Catherwood fly, Roop??; a cool Fly Rod & Reel shrimp of some kind; John D.'s Fishskin fly ( I think I need to get some of that stuff); a cockroach deciever; and Dave Williams 1/2 and 1/2.
Thanks again for the swap.
I'll graduate from sending in clousers yet.
DB
Bob - Received my box today. My 3.5 year old was as excited as I was. Boy, there are some terrific flies! I had a anonymous submission & I feel almost embarassed to bring it up compared to some of the terrific flies I recieved. Nontheless, if the Ray's Fly that a few folks have referred to has pink bucktail (along w/ olive & white), those are mine. The pattern is called a "Baymen Universal" - so named by Dave Bitters of Baymen Flyfishing in Duxbury (and, I've noted, an advertiser on the site now). Unsolicited plug for his shop: if you're nearby, stop in. He has a terrific set up, right on the way to Duxbury Beach.
I'll confirm that my fly is one of the anonymous ones & post the recipe - although I suspect it's pretty easy to figure out. I apologize for not putting on some eyes, however eyes or not that fly absolutely slays out in Plymouth & Dux bays.
