I'm trying to upgrade my ISP at home. In protest of a monopoly who charges $50 a month, I refuse to get Mediaone until there is competition. I'm looking for a better ISP for 56k. A quick search of the list finds these in my area code:
A+Net
M3Net
InREach
Juno
Tiac
IBS
Mpower
Spire
Question: Anyone have any preferences or opinions on any of these. We basically want the 56K to be functional most of the time , ESPECIALY during peak times (e.g. 7-9 pm).
Yes the extra phone line is $15-20 per mo. A good ISP is about the same. So $30 to $40 a month. But I was gonna hold off on the extra line and just turn on the cell phone. There is some overlap there in service. Why have an extra phone line while your cell sits quiet? That's if you can tolerate giving your cell # as an alternative.
As for the $$$ aspect we're looking at building an addition to the house and until I'm comfy squeezing into the big increase in monthly payments I'm leary of taking on a Mediaone rate of $50/mo. ($600 per year) . And since they are a monopoly they can go to $59.00/mo. anytime they want. I don't like it. So a solid 56K should do. And it helps to have other means available to download larger files to zip disks, like work for some people. I mean how often do you need to download a 16MB Netscape upgrade?
terry,
I use concentric as my dial-up ISP and they have a flat rate $ 19.95/mo for unlimeted access. No 800 dial-up access at this rate but lot's of local numbers..
First Mediaone is not $50 a month it's $49.95. http://216.71.206.188/images/flytalk/Happy.gif" border="0" align="middle">The service is really $39.95 per month and $10.00 rental of the cable modem. You could buy your own modem for about $200.00 and it will pay for itself over time.
I've had it for 2 years and the price hasn't gone up. Probably because DSL is starting to catch up.
There are inherent advantages and risks to being online 24/7/365. Email me for details.
Or you can go to Kmart and pickup a Bluelight CD for free dialup access. <img src="http://216.71.206.188/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif
FWIW, before I got a cable modem ($29.99/mo if you have cable TV, +$10 if not) I have Earthlink for $19.95/mo and it only let me down about 5 times in a year (probably due to maintainence since it was 1-3am).
