Going to Hraker's in two weeks to fish with my brother. He is an offshore nut. He tells me I can expect yellowfin, wahoo, kings, maybe some dolphin. I have a 13 wt rplxi with rio leviathan versatip. Big question is flies?????? Any ideas on what to tie (or buy) Do I need the fancy offshore junk at $20.00 a pop or just bigger deceivers, EPs, etc. Any input will be much appreciated.
Think baitfish. Just because its offshore doesn't mean it has to be big.
For example, late in the year the sardinas down Cabo way are in the 1-2 inch range and anything bigger gets ignored. Small olive/white clousers with just a touch of flash fished slow and deep account for a lot of yellowfins to 25lb or so.
If they're chowing down on adult mackerel or ballyhoo then your offering will need to be bigger.
There are a few Harkers regulars here who can offer first hand experience.
Thanks Adrian. My brother lives down there and does a lot of offshore, but never with a fly rod; he's big into, and successful with, dragging junk all over the ocean. Just want to have a few "secret weapons".
