Found several hungry pike today -- all respectably sized, maybe from 26-30" or so, and all hit a white Fishair fly that I tied just this morning. Also got a nice largemouth as a bonus! The first pike did the classic "come from behind" attack in shallow water so I could see the fish pushing a growing pile of water as it approached . Another one hit from the side from about 8' away and leaped horizontally just above the surface before hitting the fly :Eyecrazy: . It was almost like it charged so hard that it couldn't keep it's body in the water :hihi: . Here's another one of those "pull the fish up and try to get a photo" shots:
Nice going Q, if you keep that up, you likely be the next invitee to the Great North trip!
I had fun with pikers today as well, but that is another story for later on.
Lake Champlain is at flood stage (100.3 ASL). Pike and Bass are up in the trees..literally...swimming around big Cottonwood and Maples in 4 feet of water. It's like fishing the Mangroves and Peppertree snags for Snook. The warmest water is right next to the tree trunks, so that is where the Bass are. The Pike are focusing on their spawning so are cruising in the trees and grass. Fun fishing.
I'm jealous... Baby duty keeping me inside more than I would like...
Pike in the shallows this time of year is one of my favorite types of fishing, even if the fight is short lived in this cold water. Everyday I drove home last week I drooled as I passed the Mallets Bay Creek backwaters. Glad someone is enjoying!!!
Good news is I should have a brand new custom 9WT ready for a test run by Sat AM. A little overkill perhaps; but then there are some 15+lbers up in those shallows.
