Juro has a good one buried in the archives. Either do a search or else get a list of all patterns... I don't think the fly is listed as a shrimp pattern, but for the life of me, I can't recall what it is listed as... must be the heat.
Not sure on sand shrimp but Popovic's Ultra Shrimp is a great looking pattern and surprisingly easy to tie. His was designed to imitate grass shrimp but you could vary hook size/color to meet your needs.
For clarification (from someone who fishes both sides) the sand shrimp of west coast steelheading fame is a pink and mustard soft-shelled crustacean with crayfish-like features and a distinct anise-like smell growing to 5-6 inches in length with most being 2-3 inches:
You can buy them at any gas station or convenience store along steelhead / salmon rivers in the northwest by the tub like nightcrawlers.
The sand shrimp we see on the eastern seaboard is more commonly referred to as grass shrimp but is also called sand shrimp. They are small see-thru organisms rarely 1" long:
The flies these two shrimps inspire are radically different as can be seen by the images above.
Juro- The Pacific coast shrimp pictured is very similar to the mantis shrimp we find here on the east coast(except for the color) in many of the tidal rivers with soft bottoms. Stripers love them! Ron
I'm familiar with mantis shrimp from my trips to bonefish country... but was not aware they inhabit striper country... how far north do they go?
