Two Questions.....

Charlie,

What causes the several coats of laquer to cloud up after a period of time. After several coats, and looking good......some seem to cloud up after a month or so. How can this be avoided?

Also, I see that many of your wet ties say (hen) hackle for throats or collars. I try to use lower grade cock hackles or some of the webbier feathers if I have them. It seems impossible to find good natural or died hen in this area. My fly shops are filled with salt water and trout materials. Do you think it matters that much?

Howie,

The cloudy look happens from water getting under the head cement. Most likely the head cement is not penetrating the thread raps on the head of the fly. You may want to try thinning the head cement so it penetrates better. When head cement thickens after some time it does not penetrate like it did when it was new. Or you could just purchase some new head cement. Many tiers use un-waxed thread for there salmon and steelhead flies because the cement penetrates it better and you are less likely to get the milky look.

As for the hackles, some of the breeders like Whiting, Hebert, American and Metz all breed good dyed hen capes and saddles that are great for salmon flies. If you have a tackle shop that deals in any of these breeders they should be able to order them for you. If not, some of our sponsor shops carry them. If you have problems locating them PM me and I will give you some good leads.

Charlie.
