fly casting question

I ordered a video called Scientific Anglers Basic Fly Casting. So far i like it. But i just got in from practing and i am frustrated. The reason why was that i kept catching my fly line on my rod. What is the reason for that? The two things i could think of was 1) My timing was off(starting the forward or back cast to soon) or 2) i'm throwing a tailing loop. Any ideas?
