Steelhead Fly of the week Skykomish Sunrise

This is another great fly from the father and son team of Ken and George McLeod of Seattle Washington. This one was invented some time in the 1940s for fishing; you guessed it, the Skykomish River. Its use has spread since that time and it is now used in just about any rivers where steelhead are found even in some of my home waters in the Great Lakes.

Hook: Up eye salmon hook.
Tag: Silver tinsel (optional).
Tail: Mixed red ad yellow hackle barbs.
Rib: Oval silver tinsel
Body: Red chenille.
Hackle: Red ad yellow hackle mixed.
Wing: White hair.
Head: Red

Ah Charlie,

This is probably George McLeod's favorite fly, which he uses summer and winter, high water and low.

The fly that was inspired by George's father Ken (who didn't tie flies despite the misconception that many have that he did) on a trip to the Skykomish River one winter morning that has proven to be a most effective steelhead lure.

Beg to differ.

Although son George and daughter Mary produced many of his designs, Ken (while not prolific) was indeed a fly tyer.

Nice dressing Charlie.

What does one have to do to get you to completely abandon the use of chenille - it has no soul!
