Atlantic Salmon Fly of the week – Silver Downeaster

This fly is an invention of Bert Miner from Doaktown, New Brunswick. Miner is considered a very influential salmon fly tier of the early 1900’s. The fly became very popular in New Brunswick and Main and still is.


Hook: Up eye salmon hook.
Tag: Oval silver tinsel.
Tail: Golden Pheasant crest.
Butt: Black ostrich.
Rib: Oval silver tinsel.
Body: Flat silver tinsel.
Throat: Orange hackle.
Wing: Black squirrel tail or black bear.
Head: Black

Charlie,

This is another fly that works very well for steelhead, especially in the clear water of summer/fall and when tied on hooks in the #8-#12 size range. But as you know, this style of tying (sparse hariwing, thin body) wasn't used by west coast steelhead tyers until the 1950's. Even then, this style didn't become common amongst west coast steelheaders and tyers until well into the 1980's.
