Straight leader for noobs?
I am trying to teach a couple of my freinds to fly fish but running into a major problem: They are losing flies/leader at such a rate that it is becoming prohibitively expensive and they don't catch much because they spend so much time untangling and tying knots. I was thinking back to when I was a kid and my dad taught me I'm pretty sure he just had me using a relatively heavy peice of monofilament as a leader.
It seems like this would be strong enough to rescue alot of thier flies and also prevent tangles. In addition the extra weight might make it easier to cast. Since they are hardly ever using dry flies is there any reason not to give them a relatively thick striaght leader?
