bonefishing in st martin, caribbean
New to the forum, so my regards to you all who share the same passion.
I am living in St Martin, Caribbean for the last 12 years, and although most of fly and other fishers alike are targetting Tarpon (which somedays become a nuisance, cause we have a lot...) I started to search and scout the area for bonefish and bonefish only 2 years ago, and I can tell you there are a lot of them here. They are very localized and as elusive as they are in other places, but I discovered that their average size is between 5 to 10 lbs+, and I have yet not caught a fish smaller than 5lbs. They respond extremely well to light tan coloured flies, and the best of all (I could not believe it myself) they are active YEAR ROUND! The first year I started fishing for then, I just passed the winter because I thought they were not so active, until last year when fishing for small jacks on a Flat with a tan Clouser, I caught 2 of them in the 5lbs range, than I continued fishing them all winter with pretty good results. The main fact I discovered about our local Bones, and I am sure it is due to inexistant fishing pressure, is that they come really close to you before getting spooked. My personal best is a 10ft ''cast'' and a nice fish released.
Now for those interested in tarpon and planning to visit us, well.... where to start?
Locations : In the Lagoon : In front of any structure that casts lights at night (restaurants, marina docks, the pass below the Simpson Bay Bridge, etc...)
Out of the lagoon : Any dock, with a preference for the Bobby's Marina dock and pier in Philipsburg (both day and night), any harbor where you can see forage fish.
Time : YEAR ROUND
FLIES : Night = Shrimp imitations in any colour combination, the best being Purple/Pink - The classic ''Black and Purple'' works well too, but better on the light's edges.
Day = The classic ''Black and Purple'' + any large deceivers with coulour combinations based on Black.
That's all folks just wanted to share my modest experience and some tips.
All the best to you all. Tight Lines
