Tay season opens

Yesterday the 15th Jan many more rivers opened their salmon fishing seasons.
Whilst board regulars Gordon Armstrong Graham Ritchie and myself fished the Ness system the movers and shakers were at the Tay.

The Tay season opened today with reasonable hopes. Following the big floods of Monday the river had fallen back to a semi-fishable height and was falling steadily. Unfortunately there was some rain overnight in the west and the weather had turned very mild (up to 11 degrees today) which melted off snow which had fallen in the last few days on the hills in Glenlyon and north of Blair Atholl. The river was already up by about 8 inches at Aberfeldy by 9am and the rise continued down the Tay all day and this really scuppered much of what chance there was.

Two springers were caught. One estimated at 16lb was caught and released by James Lapsley of Denny on Upper Dunkeld and Stfan Schumann from Germany had a 15 pounder from Loch Tay.

Most beats had a few kelts but numbers hooked were well below the usual on account of the poor conditions.

However, it wasnt a cold day and everyone enjoyed themselves!
