Talking X-Patterns for lakers

I've been doing some research on flies for lakers and decided to create some experimental patterns. Most of what I've found on laker flies are tandem flies and I am limited to single barbless in the areas I fish. I trolled for lakers last summer with a down rigger and spin rod, got to do that since these critters are hanging out at between 50 and 75 feet deep.
This spring I plan to go after them with the 7 & 9Wt fly rods, while they are cruising the upper layers of water. Deep sinking lines will be the order of the day to cover the water column from 15 feet down to 35 feet.
So what to use? They seem to like large minnow/bait fish so here are some experimental patterns.. this one worked last summer,

LARGE SMELT (inspired by the Sedotti Slammer of Slinger) about 6 inches long, very full dressing, tied on Mustad C51S BLN size 2/0
