Question Fly casting 101

I've recently began the quest of learning how to fly fish.

My question is, when you cast a line is the line and fly suppose to touch the ground behind you where your casting?

Take for example, I'm casting in my backyard, is it proper for the line or fly to touch the grass behind me if I'm casting overhead or sidearm or is the fly and line supposed to remain in the air until it reaches the surface of the water where I want it to land?

Thank you.
