Rite in the Rain

Has anyone used the Rite in the Rain waterproof notebooks?

http://www.baproducts.com/riterain.htm

I just thought it might come in handy if anyone wanted to take notes while fishing.

2'nd alternative?

Used to use this, or a like product, for a long time. Found 'them' to be a pain in the fanny. Ended up using a small mico-recorder (still have the bugger .... until wife-type found and appropriated same a couple of weeks ago) as it doesn't require a pen, etc., and etc.

I work outdoors in Oregon and live by my rite in the rain notebooks - you can't draw a river or a beach with a voice recorder. These notebooks do not work with pens, but work well with a standard 2H or 3 pencil. The regular 2 pencil is too soft and smears.

That's quite a testimonial! So with a #3 pencil these notepads do not smear? If pens don't work, how but those oil pencils?

Thanks in advance,
Juro

My kayak book also recommends:

#171 - Keep a plastic scuba diver's underwater slate on the deck as a log and record critical navigation information. You can also note good fishing conditions or unusual tide rips, reconstruct a narrative of the journey, or develop an understanding of local weather patterns.

Any thoughts on that?

I should clarify. Anything will smear if you work it on too thick, but 2H or 3 is a vast improvement over 2 for these books.

also, pens work just fine just as long as the book is dry. If the book is wet, or the ball point itself is wet, then no go. Ditto for markers.

I haven't had occasion to try oil pencils ...
