Bonito Logic

First step toward a successful Boneclave '2000 is a target date / location. Because Washburn is booked, it is best to consider alternate lodging venues. These should correspond to accessibility to fishing grounds. Frankly, the logistics of boating everything to camp was less than ideal - although the waterfront site was a thing of beauty in and of itself. Criteria for base camp selection should focus on bonito as well as albies (the mainstay of the first annual Boneclave). We'll probably see some spanish macks in the mix as well and maybe a skipjack or two. The bonito's range extends as far northeast as Monomoy, but more reliable locales are further west toward the Elizabeths, the Vineyard, and Nantucket. Horseneck / Westport MA offer an alternative on the other side of Buzzards Bay worth considering. Launching from the islands would introduce complexity in getting out there but a much, much easier time fishing - and make sucess from shore a real possibility.

First and foremost, I welcome folks to research and suggest options for base camp for Boneclave 2000.

The floor is open...

Juro:

Just got back from the Vineyard and talked to my buddy who is a boat guide there. He said that they have a confirmed Bonito Blitz off of the Elizabeths the other day. Should be getting stronger once those hot humid days start !

RE:Bonito Logic

Washburns booked? Are we assuming the date move from after Labor day up into Aug. to avoid missing Bonito?
If so Labor Day weekend is out: that leaves
Aug 13
Aug 20
Aug 27
These are Sundays. Should we strattle the weekend-weekdays?
For instance Sun thru Tues.? Sat-Mon?
We should nail the date first, then move on to "where" and the other topics. This is a biggee and is sure to cause some to be excluded.

Terry -

I called reserveamerica months ago, and 'our' site is booked thru august. There are alternatives but not great ones. I propose we do something off Washburn, somewhere a little less difficult to launch and transport materials to/from.

Jeff Smith and I have discussed doing this as a 'regional open' so Washburn may be too small.

RE:Bonito Logic

There is one campground on the vineyard, MV family campground. I'll call them Monday to get an idea of what's available in late August Early September range. I think if we can get a solid date soon everything else will fall into place.

Jim:

I just got back from the Vineyard and some of the folks in our party actually stayed at the campground. Pretty good location in that it is 10 minutes from the ferry in Vineyard Haven. The tent sites where around 32 dollars a nite. They also had small cabins that are around 85 dollars a nite. I am not sure the capacity of the cabins, though.

RE:Bonito Logic

At one point I had called them; in fact they have a website. JimW - thanks for taking the initiative to call them. Among the questions we should ask:

a) what capacity per cabin?
b) group sites?
c) proximity / location / conveniences? (Good report from John M)

We should probably be prepared to make individual reservations if the group dynamics won't work. Another creative approach is to make it a family thing, lodging nearby to indulge in fishing activities as available.

I'm sure some / many with boats will run across from Vineyard Sound shoreline from Woods Hole to Cotuit.

Also, those heading to the island should work together to minimize the vehicle / ferry costs to the island. Pooling high occupancy vehicles is the best approach. Shore fishing opportunities are good on the island.

Hmmm... a shore slam deserves a good prize!

RE:Bonito Logic

One issue with the V-yard and boats is that there is a lack of places to put them if you want to sty with the group that night. Transient docking/mooring is at a premium during that time of the season. There are a few ramps available on-island but then you get into the whopping costs of transporting a boat/trailer/car rig (IF you can get a ferry reservation!!).
M-V Family campground is nice, I used it during the Rod & Gun Club tournament. They had no problem with a fisherman's odd hours. BTW I think the cabins sleep 4.
I think we are dealing with mutually conflicting concearns;
To find Bonito, we need to move the date up into Aug
To find campground space, we need to be after Labor Day
To find Bonito, boats would increase the chances
To deal with boats adds costs and exponential logistical issues

Maybe a solution is to set up two groups, shore anglers using M-V campground as an operations centre and boating anglers that use capeside access? We'd loose a lot of the communal sprit but....

Either that or we make it a one-day Bone-Slam!
Just my $ .02

RE:Bonito Logic

Very good points Bob, in fact I've been concerned about the transport costs as well... even for vehicles w/o boats!

I will continue to look for capeside options, perhaps anyone else who can do some legwork could do so too.

BTW - the Nantucket Sound stretch from Monomoy west gets it's share of bonito in August. I have a up-to-the-moment connection in the fishing business who can inform us of their presence in that stretch. Lodging and access is easy as pie, although it lacks the romance of a Washburn or an MV. My point is, I think there are several ways to skin the cat.

RE:Bonito Logic

MV Family campground is booked for August.
Another option might be Sippewissett Cabins-Campground, 836 Palmer Av, Falmouth; 508 548-2542. See where it is I've been to this place and don't have any bad memories other than the traffic on rte 28. Just another option if the Elizabeths are the target. The campground is going to call me back about a group rate, although they do not have a group site. I'll try to get the availability for late August and post possible dates. I was using 30 people as a guesstimate just to feel out the possibilies at this

RE:Bonito Logic

Funny... I was thinking about Sippewisset myself! It's in a very nice location although proximity to launching facilities are unknown. It's barely on Buzzard's Bay just to the north of Nobska / the knob. Definitely in tunoid country.

Website is HERE.

Thanks Jim, keep us up to date.

RE:Bonito Logic

Hmmmm.
Looks like sippiwisett is out unless we want to really wing it and go with thier first come first served policy for anything less than a 5 day reservation.
Bayview is next on the list. The Location is maybe not the best but at least it's over the bridge. They do have the safari (group sites) available the weekend of August 18-20, this is basically a field with just a few trees. That's 2 nights $31/night 2 persons per site. So were talking $31/person for 2 nights (not a state park rate but they do have 3 inground pools and tennis courts, not thay they'll be getting any use from us.) Also available are the 20th-22nd and they have limited availablity the 25th-27th.
OR
Go for the 5 day BoneClave marathon at sippy.

RE:Bonito Logic

Jim -

What is the site cost/night at Sippewissett? Is there a limit of sleepers/tents per site or does it vary? Perhaps I should call them instead of belaboring you further...

Terry reminded me that we did Sunday through Tuesday last year due to crowd aversion and availability. It didn't seem to stop anyone from attending! I think this could put us in a better standing with some of these choices, as well as for non-camping choices.

I'll get back on the trail of these options and report later on this week.

RE:Bonito Logic

Juro and others,

I'll wait and see what you guys decide on. I will be on the Vineyard from Sunday ( Aug. 20th ) to Labor Day. If you guys choose the Vineyard, I'll definitely join in.
I can shuttle a few people around the island for shore fishing.
( I think the campground is too far from any fishable spots that are within walking distance. )
There would even be room for a tent or two in the backyard of where I'm staying...with outdoor shower (near Tashmoo). Maybe even a bonus or two meal from Mrs. B.
If any boat owners at the Boneclave choose to fish the waters around the Vineyard....I'll gladly toss some $$'s for gas.
Doug B.
