Exclamation 2 questions

Hi everyone. I'm brand new here and brand new to fly fishing. I come from yorkshire UK and can't wait to get started. I've bought all the gear and I'm just making sure I get a few points cleared up before I go for my first time!

My first question is:

What is the best knot for attatching fly line to a mono leader?

And second:

Should the leader taper rapidly from i.e. 12lb, 8lb, 6lb, 4lb or more gradually i.e. 6lb 5lb 4lb?

Thanks,

DLL

p.s. I have been a coarse fisherman for years so I should have a little water craft about me!!!

Welcome.

For your first question, most people use a nail knot to attach the leader to the flyline. I use and albright knot for clear intermediate lines because they tend to hold better in that situation, but the nail knot is the real workhorse.

For your second question, the progression of the leader components needn't be in one pound test increments. Your first scenario is best and will generally transfer plenty of energy from the cast forward to the fly and turn it over.

Thanks for that, exactly what I needed. So the nail knot is fine for all situations including fly line and mono?

Would a leader of 15lb-10lb-6lb-4 or 4.5lb be ok as that's all I've got for the time being or would the first scenario be noticebly better than that?

The nail knot is good for mono to flyline, and some people even use it for the backing to flyline connection (although most use an Albright for that).

Depending on what type of fish you'll be targeting, the leader materials that you have sound fine. They are too light for any saltwater fishing, but ou should be perfectly okay with what you have for light freshwater fishing.

Have fun, and let us know how you do.

First of all, welcome to the forum!

I tie my fly line to the leader with a very simple knot that very few people use, but it's very effective. You can find tying instructions here:

As for the taper, how long a leader are you planning on using? For shorter leaders, 4 different line sizes may not be necessary.
