WATER!

In the Seattle PI this morning there is a great article on water. Please read it if you have time. From reading it I think you will gather that water is soon to be the most powerful political tool in the entire world even taking over oil and energy concerns.

Some facts mentioned in the article.

In Russia it takes 29,000 gallons of water,(flood irrigation) to produce 1 pound of cotton.
That between 5,000 and 10,000 children die each day world wide from bad water.

There is a lot more interesting info in the article, lot's on what is happening in the western USA, please read.

Sorry I can not get a direct link to the article.

WATER.....PROBLEMS!

Good evening,
OC brings up a good point, here's a few more tidbits I found in just a random search;

Glaciers in Alaska are thining at the rate of 1/2 meter per year for a while, and have excellerated beyond that point in the last 10 to 20 years, dumping 900 Trillion gallons of fresh water into the ocean, enough to raise sea levels 1/4 inch worldwide!

Latin America and the Caribbean have 13% of the worlds water supply, but Human sewage, eutrophication (water polution caused by over-fertilization) Agriculture, Mining, and Deforestation render it usless. Two rivers, the Medellin and Bogota in Columbia are almost devoid of disolved oxygen.....cause?...
Polution!

Chinas most urgent enviromental issue, WATER! They face increasingly frequent shortages, and dangerous levels of polution. The Yellow River, once the crown jewel of the country, no longer reaches the sea about 200 days of the year!

Western United States water resources are stretched to the limit, with little or no room from current allocations. Any changes in global temperature could change the amount of water available here! The Columbia River soon will have to be managed for Power OR Fish, but will not sustain both!

OC's right, read the article, or just punch in Water Problems on your favorite S. Engine.....I think I got 35 million + sites
Thanks OC for the heads up.....yeah, I could see it.

Alaska is exporting water via old tankers to China and has been doing so for sometime. There are several long term water "reservations" made by local politicians with International water brokers involving a system on Baronof Island (Sitka) that have water rights tied up for a long time (don't remember the specifics)
