New member saying hi!

Just want to say hi to everyone and ask for some advice!

I'll be taking a holiday with my girlfriend in May to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. It's not going to be a fishing only trip as my gitrlfriend doesn't seem to understand my obsession with waving bits of fur and feather about, but i'll be squeezing in as much fishing as i can.

I understand that bonefish would be the obvious choice and i'm hoping to maybe get in two guided trips during my 2 week stay. I'm not gonna be able to afford much more than this so any other fishing will have to D.I.Y.

Does anyone have any advice they can offer me as I have never been flats fishing before. Will there be any opportunities to fish close to my hotel in Playacar? Not just for bones but for any other species as well? I've been told that there's plenty of barracuda around and that i should also take a spinning rod. Is this correct?

Sorry if i've dragged on a bit in my first post, but i want to gather and learn as much as i can before i get out there.

Guess the missus was right about the 'obsessive' part!

Welcome daniel... I think you should ask your question on the Bonefish or Destination forum and I would think you might get some meaningful responses.

John, I'm confused. Daniel asked his question on the only board that seems devoted to flats' fishing. The only Destinations board on the forum is in the Speyclave and usually features threads relating to speyfishing. It seems that he asked the question in exactly the right place.

Daniel, I have fished that area several times but always from a dedicated lodge. I know I've read other threads about that area right on down to Punta Allen including a few DIY ideas. Try doing a search and you should be able to pull some information up that way.

Take your rod

I have done the mexico resort gig a few times. Henry, a regular on this and other boards has also had a blast fishing the area. Now, it is NOT world class bonefishing, be aware of that. But, i have taken bones blind casting likely cuts, and lagoons. In addition you will hook up with jacks of many varities, cudas and so on. No Lic is required fishing from the beach/wading. Another option is to take the ferry to Cozumel Island. There are a few guides over there and the ferry runs several times a day. just do a few searches and you should find a couple of guides. I personally cannot recommend any...as I have not fished Coz. So, take the rod....Gotchs did the trick.....some flashy flys for jacks and cudas...have a beer and fish a little...have another beer......fish.....drink.....drink more....and fish.
