Has anybody tried steelheading using circle hooks for deep-drifted nymphs? The geometry of the take seems like it should work, and it would also reduce foulhooking. Am I missing something, or would this make sense?
fish has to take and turn and go.steelhead dont always do that. some only hold it briefly without a turn. know one person that tried it on agressive summerruns and stopped after a few missed fish.Beau
I tried this in Erie at 12mile last fall and had bad luck. Lost about 6 fish very quickly. Switched to Standard salmon hooks and hooked a bunch and landed three.
My thought is that circle hooks work best for prey that is really active about taking the fly- tunas, stripers, blues.
Tied up a bunch but I've only used them sparingly with nothing to report. I do know of one individual who has had success using them on chinook, but that's it.
On Page 30 of the Feb issue of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying, there's an interesting article on circle hooks.
