sight fishing for choppers

Fished the bay with a friend yesterday and witnessed some pretty cool bluefish feeding behavior. After a slow morning of fishing a 6ft deep cove we noiced a splash and decided to have a look. We came upon a very long and narrow spit of white sand that was barely knee deep.

What we witnessed for the next 3 hours was a parade of 6-7 pound bluefish running right down the middle of the bar in barely enough water to cover their backs. We had a hoot sight casting to singles and pods of 5-20 fish - all of which put up quite a tussle on the 9wt - complete with head shaking jumps and cartwheels.

The fish were somewhat picky as we noticed many of them "tailing" to pick bits of food out of the sand- often times our flies. It was a spectacle as wave after wave passed by us until the bar dried out and we could no longer spot the fish over the white sand.

We stopped by Brewster and had more good sight fishing until the clouds rolled in and shut us down. Mostly bluefish but we had shots at some large single bass there as well.

Time to buy more wire :lildevl:
