I've cast one of these 8wt at baymen outfitters. Sweet indeed. Super light in the hand. Maybe it's that spigot ferrule but it really casts smooth. I wouldn't call it a fast (stiff) but it puts out a decent cast with very little effort.
Truth be told, an 8wt is light for surf, rips, ocean boat use, etc. But it's fine for the places most cast a fly for stripers. A 9wt would be a better all-around tool. Sometimes you want a 10wt. I tell my better half I need them all!
If this is in your price range you should consider it a damn good option. If it's your first rod for stripers, consider yourself lucky.
