Try this one in the spring; it’s the Baby Rainbow. I think Steelhead see it as a competitor and slam it hard.
Hook: 3X streamer
Tail: Short green bucktail.
Rib: Flat silver tinsel.
Body: Pink rabbit fur.
Collar: Purple hackle.
Wing: White under pink under green bucktail, with gray squirrel on top.
Eye: Jungle cock
Head: black
Give me a day or two and I will have some more good ones for you.
Smolt,
With all the emerald shiners and smelt in the Niagara, this is my #1 .
Nothing special, just BIG - at least 4 in. some of mine are 5 & 6 in long.
# 2 3X lg. heavy down eye streamer hook
Large lead eyes
Tail: flashabou or litebrite, Stiff stemmed white marabou (the ones you never use because of the stem)
This keeps the tail from fouling on the hook.
Body: white diamond braid
Hackle: BIG white saddle OR schlappen tied in tip first.
Rib: silver wire - counter to the hackle.
I've done a few with a long wing of dark green crystal flash or olive tri-lobe hair from O---s.
Sort of a Clouser-bugger. size 8 up to #2.
This is another good one, the Uncle Salty (don’t ask). It is probably my best producing fly for great lakes steelhead.
The Zonker strip should be bound to the body matuka style, using the red wire rib.
Hook: Up eye Atlantic salmon hook
Body: Purple Dubbing.
Rib: Heavy red wire.
Wing: White zonker strip.
Hackle: Natural guinea in front of purple schlapin wound as a collar.
Head: Red
Hey Steve,
Haven't had a chance to get yours in the water yet but I will. :hihi: Thanks brother.
Hook: TMC 5263 (3X Streamer) #6
Tail: Short red gen hackle.
Rib: Flat gold tinsel.
Body: Yellow chenille.
Collar: Red gen hackle. Palmered.
Head: Red, with yellow and black painted eyes
Nice streamers!
At the Salmon R. I've had good luck w/ a very glittery streamer imitating the salmon smolt. I tie it like a saltwater "Mushy" w/ angel hair and a epoxy head. Man... the steelies slam it!
I'll try to find a photo to post.
Just tied one up
here goes:
#4 hook
white ultra hair spine
poly bear tied high tie style (sparse) white & light green
angel hair topping Dk Blue
epoxy or goop head.
eyes of choice (usually use bigger ones.... but this is what I had handy)
Add spots or parr markings w/ sharpie pen
One can add a tungsten strip to the hook shank to get deeper. As shown it sinks nicely in the riffles.
This pattern works nicely for bass, pike and SW species..... color to match bait.
Thanks again Charlie, and thanks to Patagonian and Jim as well. With all these beautiful new patterns (new to me) I have more than enough motivation to get started this weekend.
Hook: 3X streamer
Tail: Short red hackle fibers.
Body: Pearl flat braid.
Throat: Red hackle fibers.
Wing: White polar bear or calf tail with a small amount of gold flash on top.
Head: White with a black eye painted on it.
