Sat down and did this one.. wanted it short..looks like a sand eel... but sand eel popper????? no.. this would just be an attractor I suppose...White Hackles on the boottom with one white gizzly down the sides and topped with four olive hackles... the inside is bucktail as long as the hackles and 360 degree flashabou.. the top side have two very short grizzly hackles about 2 inches long.
I think what is so distinct about your style is that you leave no awkward transitions over the length of the fly. This is true of your featherbrain as well.
Juro... CAC opens this weekend and I maybe going down with the old 4 weight and hit a couple ponds in Chatham... all stocked... maybe I can hook up to some "old" holdover Browns . May take the Yak out on the pond as well....let me know...
Very tempting... but Sunday looks very warm and sunny and we might try to make up the Nor'easter Spey clave up north. I have to do it early in the season because once my buddies from Chesapeake come back into town my brain gets feathered (little striblue joke there )
Since you have seen way more sand eels than I have, let me ask you this: do they ever mill around on or just under the surface? If so, that popper would sure be a fun way to go?
Doc...They have been at all levels of the water column... I don't use Poppers much but thought I would tye it that way..you know... with the use of the hackles... I will give it or one similar a shot as soon as possible in Chatham.
John, another cool pattern. I've just booked a trip with Captain Dave at Cape Lookout Charters in North Carolina for June, will tie some of these and your other great creations up for that outing. I had to do something to get out on the water amongst fish!
... by the way, how about doing one of these for off-shore, such as a Bob's Banger on 1" Live Body? Would probably work well for bills and tunoids.
