As of last year, Redington IS Orvis. I like them both.
Redington always breaks the price/performance barrier and provides total commitment to service. Orvis has been one of the founding themes in American flyfishing and has both great value (BattenKill) and top of the line (Vortex) in their poduct line.
But when it comes to buying a rod I am a Sage man all the way. Not all of their products are the best in their class, but most are for my preferences. They have the rod weights I use the most nailed and they have the actions that my particular casting style works best with. That's the key, what works for you - everyone's a little different in preference and you should get what works best for your needs. Worry about the other stuff like cost later.
