Fly Fishing Knots

Hello all,
I am very new to fly fishing. I am mainly focused on small stream trout fishing and lake trout fishing for small rainbows. My first question is what is a good set up for small stream fishing. My rod is a 3 wt. Currently all I have is my fly line and a tapered leader that is 9 ft long. Is it better to use tapered leaders? or just tie your own leaders? If I make my own leaders, what is a good knot to tie a leader with no loop onto the fly line which has a pre made loop? Is it okay to cut the loop off of the fly line and use something like an albright knot to conntect a leader to the fly line? Also what would be a good set up for lake fishing for smaller rainbows? Thanks for any info.
