I think you are on the right track because the intruder is fly thy that pushes a lot of water and gets the attention of te fish from the disturbance it causes while pulling against the current. I have found that flies with a muddler style head are very effective in situations such as you describing, I use either a deer hair head or I spin big collar of slinky fiber to create the resistance and then use a snappy staccato strip to accentuate the pushing of the water. Stripers will often attack these flies really agressively. Give it a try.
