Summer Steelhead in the Deschutes

Traditionally, July Fourth marks the beginning of the summer season on the Deschutes, given there are sufficient numbers of summer steelhead in the lower river to have a reasonable expectation of hooking one some calm morning or howling evening.

I usually look for good fishing when The Dalles passage count exceeds 5,000 Steelhead per day. What I've seen to date is a little below that, but, barring the fish are not holding in the barge lanes between The Dalles and John Day, there should definitely be a catchable population in the river.

From personal experience I know a run of 2-salt fish enters in June or late May. In late July, I've caught fish at Macks Canyon that were already significantly colored. I don't know for sure if this is a native run or some of the many introduced stocks; nevertheless. they're there and of good size (eight to twelve pounds -- again in my experience).

Wish I were there.

Any recent reports?
