Could anyone help me find a good link for how to tie a crayfish imitator? I recently learned how to tie one which has the following recipe;
3x hook in 4,6,or8
Brown deer hair
Sili legs in orange and black
Speckled hen back crawfish orange
orange or orange crystal dubbing or chennile
I first tie the sili legs of at the bend in the hook.
StepII; pinch off a good amount of the deer hair and tie it on.
StepIII; tie on a hen back or hackle. (tie in at the tip as you usually would) finally tie some wing straw about a two inch piece on.
IV: place some dubbing on about 3" on thread about a quarter inch thick; wind it on like a nymph thorax. wind to about an eighth of an inch from the eye, and tie off.
V; with hackle pliers wind the speckled hen back feather to the front of thorax 3 to 4 winds, cut, and tie off.
VI; wind the thread back to the hook bend; pull the straw over the top, and wrap, then pull straw back, go under it with the thread, and pull straw forward, and wrap again, so that it gives the look of the segmentation of a crustacean.
(I use about a quarter inch of spacing between winds, and have 3 of them. ) cut the straw so that there's a bit on the end you can fan over the eye to look like a tail, and place some head cement on it for shine and hardness if you like.
You can tie this with or without barbell eyes, and you can use hook down or hook up/ it doesn't matter. I happen to prefer hook up ... I think it looks more realistic, but the bass on my river go either way! They aint picky when it comes to crayfish!!
Note; after you tie on the deer hair, you can grab a couple of full feathers and tie them in, one on each side of the hook, so the tip of the feather is sticking out the back to look like a claw. It adds to the effect, but usually gets pummeled after a couple of hits by fish.
Did that make sense? A local guy showed my son how to do this the other day and he tied his first crayfish last night! He's really getting into this flyfishing stuff, which makes me really happy and really proud to have a fishing buddy. Maybe if I can ever learn how to post pics I will get some pics out there!
So if you guys have some other links of "how to" for us it would be appreciated!
