Likewise, I haven't ventured out in the yak on big open water at night - yet When I do, it will be in company of other paddlers that know the area well.

All of the areas I fish at night are familar places that I've paddled many times during the day. Being familiar with potential trouble spots and nuances of current at different stages of the tide is a big confidence booster once the sun has gone down.
