Denise read me an article published in Smithsonian on this subject. It strikes me as common sense that fish rubbing their jaws on rocks after having been caught are repeating a learned behavior in which they were hooked, broken off, and the fly was still embedded in the lip, therefore the jaw-rubbing was used to dislodge the hook. On a semi-unrelated note, if the fish don't have the part of the brain needed to register pain, what difference does it make?
