I was on the rapid river down by Umbagog a few weeks back. All landlocks - not a single brookie, and yes, lots and lots of smallmouths in the still water just below the rapids. The folks up in Rangeley are all up in arms, but the no-kill rule on the river applies to smallies, too. The guy in the tackle store in Oonsuc (sp?) was rather alarmed about the bass. They are discussing mandatory bass culling, but it's hard for folks to kill and dump back a fish - any fish.
I'd be very curious to hear opinions on the ethics of angler culling. Sometimes, whay I catch a sucker in brookie waters, I wonder about killing it, but somehow never do.
