Those hooks are awfully hard to get, T-Rich! I think a TMC 3761 does a fine job, myself, although #2 is the largest you can get. The overall effect is a little more graceful than the old, boxy 7970...

No, it's natural. There seems to be some discrepancy in pattern recipes between crest, calftail, and colours. Might be interesting to find out what the "original" was!

A Rainbow Trout Flatwing? It is supposed to be somewhat "thick" like a small planter 'bow, so maybe it loses its effect somewhat. I'm thinking it might catch some big browns up the road.

Never! It distorts the view of the fly and makes it too difficult to properly place materials. IMHO it makes a difference - although you have to focus a bit more, you can get better results.
