Flies...

As Mr. Jones has said, TSA actually recommends carrying on "expensive flies". I carry a copy in case a TSA agent has had a bad morning. However, that's the US agents. Other countries are weird about...

Lens Colors...

Hi,

Probably too late here, but I don't recommend amber lenses, unless you have very dark eyes or like headaches. ;-)

Probable the best for the flats is a copper or bronze color. Amber VLT...

The Gotcha Clouser

Check it out here: http://www.flyfishingforum.com/flytalk4/showpost.php?p=171641&postcount=9

For shallow water go w/ smaller hooks #6-#4 and bead-chain eyes. I've taken everything from monster...

PS

I have had permit go over 200 yds while wading. I was (foolishly) using light tipppet (12#) and was looking for bones. I had an old SA #10 reel that held 275 yds, I think, of 30# dacron. I hooked...

Like what JR Spey is saying here. Good stuff. Listen to the man.

However, I have had a situation where I almost lost a very nice fish because it ate the fly in such shallow water we couldn't...

Twitch vs. Strip

Marty G,

It really depends on the area you're fishing and the prevailing type of bait, including what type of shrimp. In Andros, for instance, the bones (according to my guide) are feeding on mud...

Follow up...

Ok, a little follow up here. I'm still using the same technique described above, and my casting has certainly improved because of it, wind or no wind. However, I now have to say that (yes, Juro)...

We walked, trust me...

Actually, we went in July and walked bloody country mile, let me tell you. Of course, we were far less experienced in those days, but after whacking bones right out back of my little cottage in...

No worries! Not trying to be "that guy" you know, but in the immortal words of Thomas McGuane, "We have reached the time in the life or the planet, and humanity’s demands upon it, when every...

I must have done it wrong...

Wow, nice trip Juro. My memories of Eleuthera are far different, except for the AMAZING beaches. However, we never did make it up to the more touristy area of Harbour Island, but did make it down to...

Bogas on Bones?!?!?

chainlynx, first, that trip sounds AWESOME! So jealous. Andros is a lovely place and a gem of a fishery... a true bonefisherman's Nirvana.

However, unless you use a sling, you should NEVER use a...

Eye Repair = Bad.

Juro,

That is so very true. First, let me say categorically that I refuse to let any of my clients fish without eye protection. Period. Neither do I, no matter how dark it is... in fact, that's...

Mustad, Baby...

Don't know if anyone actually checks this part of the forum (since the last post was in 2009) but here's an update on Mustad. They've actually updated their tempering process on all their hooks,...

The good old back hand...

Thanks, Juro.

Just a few more comments. Personally, I've never been able to master the old backhand cast. Course, I've never had a situation that made me practice it. All my buddies that have...

The Wily Octopus

Actually, that's a pretty common sight down here, but we have more grass flats. Usually we don't spot them because they can be sooo well camouflaged that they look like a rock, or coral, or weed or...

PS

Not sure if it's kosher to post a link here to Vimeo, but I did a review of the DVD. It breaks down a couple of the main points and I try to demonstrate (poorly) the difference between his style and...

Totally Sick, Bro...

Yup. That's him... not exactly wide open, but up on plane and going at a good clip. At least 20 mph, or something close. Either way, his casting style/technique is--at the risk of raising hackles all...

Tame the Wind

You are sooo right about the breeze on bonefish flats. In fact, I think it's a catch 22: the angler who has trouble with the breeze prays for a calm day only to find the fish spooky as hell without...

To each his own...

Been to 'Lutra one time, and hopefully it'll be the last. Good DIY bonefishing my @$$! I mean, we did catch fish, but I had better luck out the back door of my little beach cottage in George Town,...

Salt/Fresh...

Best I can tell there are two general differences in freshies and salties. As myfishcasting mentioned, there's the hardware, which is a big deal, trust me. Also, saltwater rods are often expected to...

Sharky's machine...

Just got my #8 salty sharkskin out on the water for the first time today. Couple first impressions.

1) Feels awfully light, as if it were a toy line and not the genuine article. I'm sure this is...

Trunkfish?

Not sure about the link re the so-called "trunkfish". First, I've always known them as boxfish or cowfish. Second, the link mentions that their unusual shape keeps them from swimming quickly, which...

Sneaky...

OK. Here's a trick I learned from a guide in Hawaii for landing big bones while wading without risking a broken rod. It's actually pretty easy but explaining it is tough. Here goes:

When you're...

Easy Peasy (is that how you spell that?)

For years I fished with a pair of Arnette copper lens Swinger Minis I picked up in Hawaii. My good buddy was trying to convert me to Action Optics (Smiths) for a while, especially their glass lens...

Loopy...

What I said was:

Last time I was in the Key's I used 16-lb tippet and took a nice ocean-side bone. Andros super-picky big bones: 16-lb tippet. Roatan's ultra-skinny water bones out front of the...
