One for Flytyer

I think Flytyer nailed it, and I completely agree that it's not about the equipment. We all find our preferred challenges, whatever combination of species, equipment and presentation that is. Some...

Great sport!

Ah Gillie! I like your idea of planting little hooks in snaggers with light tippets. How do you play this game? Is it a Slam if you can get one hook in each leg? Do you get more points if you...

Disconnect between trout and steelhead anglers?

In the midwest, I think you'll find more steelhead than trout anglers fishing with indicators. In cold water, slow currents, and when the fish are taking only nymphs deep in the water column,...

Sage spey and one-hander need new homes

Brown Sage 6126, used 5-6 times; excellent condition--$300. Excellent summer run or midwest steelhead rod.

Brown Sage 10160, used twice; excellent condition. One of the classic big-gun winter...

Any rod specs?

I have one of Bob's demos at present (11'6" 5/6/7 fast progressive) and will bring it along. Do you know what rod Bob is donating? I have yet to see a rod of his that I didn't like.

Sponsorship of this site encouraged

I did call to sign up for the intermediate class, though Andy will probably tell me I've overstated my case (I'm a long-standing member of the Sucky Caster Club). I hope to see others of you there!...

Yup, it was all a dream.

Maybe in his restauranting days, the author got into some of the wrong kind of mushrooms.

Looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming Great Lakes Smallmouth Spey Clave in Newaygo!!!:hehe:

Great Lakes fish

Yup. Ohio and Penn. are full of fish. Anyone with a desire to catch untold numbers of fish should go there ASAP! THERE ARE NO FISH IN MICHIGAN! So don't go there. Nope. No chrome in Michigan....

Perfect time

to tie a few more of those high-and-dirty-water flies. Some of the rivers are still a day or two from cresting, but some are already on their way down. By the weekend my line will be wet! Good...

Talking Count me in

Thanks for the email, mjyp. I'll be there and can bring a few different sticks depending on what you get set up. I don't know that there are other CND Steelhead Specialists around here yet, so I'll...

Think of the fishing as related to our temps

right now. In most places this cold snap has slowed everything down. Your best bets are sunny late afternoons or the next warm day.

Good idea, Peter!

I'll have to try that one. My normal approach is the snap-T followed by an upstream stack mend. Hopefully we'll get a break in the cold that's coming so the fish will cooperate more. Yesterday,...

not the numbers, but the direction...and have a thermometer with you!

Another midwest view, this from Michigan. Barometer above 30 and steady seems best. Once water temps get below about 42-43, the best fishing is whenever the water temp goes up, even a little. As...

Thanks...

I fished an older 9wt St Croix Legend yesterday, and it worked great. Jumping 2 line weights was enough to make a difference. Thanks for the suggestions!

Rod recommendation wanted-surf/wind

I'm looking for an 8wt, I think. The key is that I'm looking for something in the under $300 world. Fish 6-10#, but casting is flats and some light surf. When it's calm, I can usually fish a 7,...

On the Mo'

Yes, I spey the Mo', but also the smaller rivers. You're surely right that there are not too many of us, but then consider how many of the salmon/steelhead flyfishers only present with a running...

At least two of us

Carl from Grand Haven. I don't post that often, but I'm around. Good to see you like the SC 1378. Occasionally you'll catch Bob B and others from the Wisconsin side hereabouts.

Carp, etc.

Well...PM Flyfisher, you should definitely get about it! I'm in Grand Haven, and you'll find good carp fishing in the flats around any Great Lakes river mouth. I fish 'em hard once the water hits...
