Ewing deceiver patches

I tie a lot of these flies in sizes 1/0 and down, and use dyed over white Ewing deceiver patches.

Nicely done

The photo is a tad dark -- is that a married wing, black & green?

Ewing deceiver patches

I use Ewing deceiver patches. Very consistent feathers in good sizes for the #1 and #2 hooks on which Syd tied his flies.

Do...

My setup

I used to use a 100W halogen similar to the one Ronn uses -- mine on a swing arm setup. The halogen light gave a bright, clear light, along with a fair amount of heat. When that unit died, I couldn't...

In my case ...

My tying desk has an adjustable-height shelf in front, and use an extension to position my vise out away from the shelf. This allows me to keep the vise very low. My upper arms are straight at my...

The Winter's Hope was developed by Bill McMillan of Washougal, WA. In his excellent book "Dry Line Steelhead", McMillan offers the following...

Curioser and curioser...

my reactions

Hmmm...

Flytier is right about the recipe for the Sol Duc Spey as tied by Syd Glasso.

On the other hand, when does a fly cease to be faithful to the original? I believe Glasso tied on Partridge...

I hate to disagree, Flytier

But I do. The feather I photographed is definitely a hooded merganser flank. I know -- I shot and skinned the bird. What I see missing from the feather in the original post is the distinct barring...

No, I don't think it's merganser flank

Here's a photo of a merganser flank. Like many duck flanks, it is barred.

Hooks

Those were tied on Partridge Salar hooks, #3. I've tied a few on silver and gold Alec Jackson Speys as well. I have hitorically on;y used black hooks for my steelhead & salmon flies, but decided to...

Spey Hackle

I use blue eared pheasant, schlappen, coque, marabou, or pheasantrump depending on the size of the fly, texture of feather, and/or color. I've used stripped peahen tail feathers as well, but did not...

Here's a second version, better proportioned, I think, with a different color...
