Hooks in Strike Indicators?

My father talked to a fellow who said he made his own strike indicators and always put hooks in them. Reason being, he says he gets a lot of hits on the indicator itself. Anyone ever had this happen...

This may seem like a dumb question, but will a nymph without a bead head sink by itself? I mean without additional weight? What keeps it from floating like a dry fly?...

I definately won't be fishing any big, open lakes. It's more like small rivers. Casting space isn't exactly confined, but there are alot of trees around, so very large casts are out of the question....
