Talk about answers....

If you are referring to the same "Little Black Stone" as we have in the East, it's nothing more than a diminutive black stonefly nymph tied in sizes 14, 16 or 18 (depending on river). Deadly as all...

fly selection

You've done pretty good so far for fly selection. The prince nymph and the pheasant tail are "generic" flies that look like a lot of nymphs in general. Another good all-around one is the hare's ear....

Tough one to answer...

That's a tough one to answer without seeing the rod. What condition it is in, the quality of the cane, the soundness of the ferrules, does it have a "set", etc. all have to be considered. During...

This is too funny!!

To use indicators, or NOT to use indicators - that is the question!!

Hmmmm... not that many years ago, dry fly purists would hassle you if you weren't fishing dry... and upstream!!! (And I was one...

I've caught 'em like that...

As it appeared that there was either a spine injury, or a malformation of some sort, I quickly released 'em.

As I was a young kid, and impressionable, I listened to some old guy near me - he said...

HMH Tube kit...

It's a well-made and clever little conversion unit, which will fit virtually ANY vise. Reasonable, too. I really like mine.

The best wet fly hackle...

Basically, these days, it is best found on common, ordinary barnyard chickens, NOT the genetic stuff. Check a few chicken farmers in your area.

"ultralight" mentality???

If that "floats your boat", go ahead...

But remember - fish can die from being "stressed" by being played too long, and especially during the warmer water of summer. Even when you revive them well...

Misspent youth...

That story reminded me of my youth - my buddy and I were varmint hunting near my favorite grouse cover. A large goshawk was sitting on a post about 175 yards away, intently surveying the cover. I...

Erie Trib Steelies

I think your steelies don't run too large, with 4 to 5 lb. fish average. (At least, that's my experience with steelies from Lake Erie.) I use a couple of rods, a 6-wt. and a 7-wt., and both rods work...

The Salmon

It's the only game in town, unless you want to go after stream trout... and midsummer is not the best time for that, either.

1. Make sure you READ AND UNDERSTAND THE REGS!

2. Use large stonefly...

I dunno...

Here in Lake Ontario, New York State took some basic rainbows, and by playing with light in the hatcheries, altered their spawning habits to make 'em FALL spawners. The true steelheads (and Skamies)...

Yeah, Fred...

You COULD live back East. (Yearly snowfall here in Rochester area is 120.5" so far - that's JUST OVER 10 FEET!)

The farmers call snowfall "Poor Man's Fertilizer"!

Yeah, we had a few days where...

Yeah, that MIGHT be true, but...

I SAW my first Canary Yellow Hummer yesterday - and I also saw WHO was driving it, getting out of it. I'd be willing to put "big bucks" on him being a "metrosexual"!

I agree!!!

The first few feet of that so-called $#@&^% floating 555 that I have sink better than some sink-tips I have owned. Even after dressing with about everything I know of. Nothing but JUNK!

Got one...

and I LOVE it! Here, the streams are too small for a longer rod. It works well for indicator nymphing, as well as high-sticking. I've caught fish up to 12 pounds or so to date on it without problems....

WOW! What a GREAT question...

No, not about his book on dry flys, just MENTIONING Gary.

Thinking about UNDERWATER bugs and what trout "see", read his book, Caddisflies. He discovered by underwater studies that a certain type...

Hey, Fred...

You get too "soft" living in conditions like that! That way, you don't appreciate how good frostbit fingers feel as they are thawing out, and keeping time to the music with your knees knocking...
