American Salmon Fishing - 1854

That looks like a spey rod to me and one huge american atlantic salmon fly fisherman.

He could have what ever pool he wants if I met him on the river !

I thought it was a spear at first, but see a fly reel and line on it.

Looks like a nice historical addition to fly fishermans library.

Hal - not a "flyreel...
That's not a "flyreel", but just a plain, ol' reel. Yeah, the "well-to-do" used these things initially, and they were universally used for casting rods and flyfishing back then.

These were very much like the ones I had as a kid. Cheap steel things that cost maybe a quarter, and they were next to useless, except to hold line. And forget "drag". They were famous for backlashes. These horrible items would wind line too tightly, and were wide enough so that the line would would become tangled badly, unless you used an "educated finger" as a level wind to spool it on in layers.

Yeah - I remember those in my nightmares! Thank God, most of 'em were "donated" to scrap metal drives during WWII!

Guy looks like a typical GL snagger. Big rod small reel and beat up fish.
