Angel Hair Bait fish - Single color
1 Attachment(s)
Here are two angel hair bait fish I tied just to use these two new colors I got at the UTF Thursday night... the Chartreuse is incredible... I have not seen any like it in the usual packages of the straight material and the other is a bueatiful Copper/brown/Gold, mixed with a Green/olive.. The camera does not really pick it up as well as seeing it but I tried by placing them directly in the sun:

Those are real nice flies Striblue! What kind of eyes did you use on those flies?
I experimented a bit, and tied a few minnow patterns recently as well, using four different colours of Angel Hair.
^ I had to use Doll Eyes because I ran out of the Epoxy Eyes.
^ This one is a little larger and has a silver cone-head in front of the eyes for added weight.
^ This is a much smaller version (#10 hook) that I'll use for sea-run cutthroat trout and coho (silver) salmon, in the rivers.

I haven't been Striper fishing before, but I'd assume these flies could work for Open Ocean Coho fishing that we have here in BC, since they feed on Herring, Needlefish, Sandlance, etc.

Doug..thanks... Yours look great as well. I see that your method is layering the angel hair... I have a number of those as well. The angel hair I have been getting lately is in a Thick package and not the flat packages...As a result I have tied them according to the Mike Martinek method of tearing ,then putting on like dubbing or spinning ,to create a thick body...I will wrap just like I would a spun deer hair.... that is... tie down than fold back and tie in a little rib of thread to hold back the material.... I pick it out with a bodkin and then brush to shape and trim... One set of eyes is Puglisi's with the pegs in back cut down... the other is the usual 3-d prism eyes..but green. I epoxy the eyes in... so they actually attach to the hook shank.. I also tye them like Bob Pink does by having the eyes at the very end of the hook eye as yours are. The bunching will only work for the body...any dorsal colors would need to be layer by the layering method. P.S.-----Doug look back in this archive to 4/01 (Angel hair baitfish) and 4/14 (Big Angel Hair bait fish)...I think on pages 4 and 5... go back One year to pick it up)

Thanks Striblue, I'll try that some time. I looked in all the fly patterns archives when I tied these flies, and I felt I should've contributed a little.
I mostly tie trout flies, but I tied these baitfish patterns from these instructions here -

I like to use a material identical to Angel Hair, but made by Root's, called Root's Elite Flash. I like it because it comes in larger packs than the Angel Hair, but for the same price. The strands are longer as well.

Roots Elite Flash?
The smaller version (on#10) looks similar to the Hot Flash Minnow, that I've been using with great success, that I've used the Hi-Tie method to tie. Is it tied with the Slim-Bodied Minnow method desribed by Don?
And can you point me to a source for the Roots Elite Flash material?

Hi Tom H.,

I don't really know if the smaller version (# 10) is the Slim-Bodied Minnow. I just experimented as I went, using as much material as I needed to please me. I forget how many clumps of the flash I tied on, maybe about two, I forgot...?
The Root's website is down, I heard rumours (don't know if they're true) that Root's is going out of business.

Thanks Doug.
I'll try the two clumps. Is the Awesome Hair, that Don uses in your link, packaged similar to the Roots you described? Its seems to be more material per package then you get with Angle Hair.

Thanks again,

I don't know Tom, I've never seen or used Awesome Hair before. I just tied a similar fly using the same tying instructions, but a different material (Angel Hair and Root's Elite Flash instead of Awesome Hair). I'd assume the Awesome Hair is identical or similar to Angel Hair, but I'm not completely sure.
